The consensus of opinion forming in the overheard debate was that it was germanic though there were other opinions bieng bandied about.. what really amused me was the amount of times the word was used in describing the origins of the word
e.g. feck orf that never ferking came from there its definaley ferkin german
such a common word, is its use now bieng used as punctuation?
who dictates whats offensive and whats not...i for example find the term jock to be offensive, being scottish, yet most pple find it amussing or a term of endearment!! its just a word afterall..when i was young i was told not to use it as it demostrated a lack of vocabulary.....well having failed my english o level, maybe that gives me that qualifications necessary to ask just who the fuck was shakespeare anyway?
my personal view is that if it offends its offensive.
and i know a few people from your kneck of the woods that agree with you.
im not disagreeing with you....and for the most part i agree.
i had recent cause to write an email at work that was concise and to the point...the thing i know im in hot water for being offensive, yet my boss agreed with the sentiment but not necessarily the tone....i put it to him that not having a recognised qualification in my mother tongue and never having learned to read music....i had somehow managed to wite a reply with tone...how clever is that...but mostly its down to opinions and sometimes some words are better employed than others to get a point across
the right level of language in the right place can have a desired effect and i use the word language in the way my father meant it when he said dont use that bad language not as when my teacher told me that my use of language was bad!!
Fuck is a great word. A word for all seasons. Be it the bleak mid-winter or an ecstatic summer high. Fuck is universally understood, used and renowned, irrespective of your mother(fucker) tongue!
THe most versatile word in the English language!!!!!!
It first appeared in print in around 1500 although it is known to have been around for a long time previous. Debate on its origin point to Germanic roots although equally persuasive is a Latin root. Either way we would be a lot fucking poorer for it!!!!!!
Pish,The first time it was used was when Moses dropped one of the tablets of stone on his foot.
And Lo Moses sayeth 'Oh fucking hell' Exodus 69 to be precise!!!!!!!

Fuck dates back to at least 1500 in English and probably originally came from a Germanic word. It's always been offensive.
